Privacy or secrecy is a word we all are familiar with. We all have that one friend, or so-called best buddy, with whom we love to share every aspect of our lives. Not all of the friends in the friend circle are chosen for sharing a secret. As we are very particular about our privacy, we prefer not to tell our very own secrets to more than one person. The importance of privacy in one’s life is mostly felt when there occurs a breach of secrecy and we generally come to know some gossip about that secret fact from people, who are not supposed to have even a small clue about it. We are all and almost every time, bound by the norms of secrecy in one way or the other. At times, we are keeping the secrets of close friends, or at times, we are keeping some confidential information wrapped undercover, when told to do so by a superior in the workplace. Hence, it is very important to know the art of keeping secrets in day to day life.
Let me tell you about a personal experience. It is about a secret of mine, which got leaked and two of my classmates came to know about it. It was in my college days, during my post-graduation. People during their post-graduation are expected to be a bit matured and are not supposed to do such blunders. However, what happened is more about trust issues and less about the fact of sharing the secret with more than one person. There was this friend cum classmate of mine, who was a close buddy. Although we met in the college days only and did not know each other earlier than that, since we were able to build a nice rapport, I started sharing certain ideas and secrets with her. It is no wonder that we often meet people whom we admire and perceive as an open-minded and good secret keeper. However, to trust somebody completely, one should take care of other parameters too. At first, one should always try to test how trustworthy someone is when it is a question of sharing a secret with them. You can ask other people who know that person for a long time and take feedback. I would suggest taking feedback, as a primary option but secondly, I would suggest one golden rule! And that one golden rule is, not sharing secrets with anybody. Trust me, this will work like magic. If you are the kind of person who easily gets impressed by a certain class of people, and tends to share personal aspects of life, it is of the essence that you should never try to open up to people easily. Opening up easily could cause some great losses to you.
We as social beings, are very much involved in societal activities and socializing too much can also affect our privacy. In case, we do not belong to the uppermost top creamy layer of the celebrity community, it is easier for us to keep privacy intact. We often hear news channels broadcasting reports correlated with the personal lives of celebrities. I feel ruffled when I listen to such reports. These are the invasions of one’s private life. I wonder how celebrities deal with such daily invasions. Keeping things under wrap helps us to analyse every aspect of life in a better way. When certain aspects of your life are not known to others, you are happier and it gives the feeling of being the only leader of your very own life. It helps you to make better decisions and feel confident. Even astrologers have the opinion that all future endeavours should be kept secret. Revealing them destroys the positive energy in them. When people give a varied set of responses, both positive and negative responses can intimidate the aspirant and can affect their determination towards the prime goal. In my opinion, any goal whose result is not so certain should be kept private and hidden from the public. It prevents us from being the reason for an embarrassment and a giggle. It also prevents us from being the subject of unnecessary gossip. At times, people can also misinterpret what you have told them. Anything that can be regarded as very personal and which is a bit complex to explain to another person can be at times misinterpreted if the listener does not possess the same level of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is another parameter that should be present in the person with whom you are sharing your secrets with.
The solution to all our secrecy and privacy issues is the good management of all the confidential information that we carry with us. Not every information is meant to be kept hidden or secret. As an example, even if a student gets bad scores, he must communicate it to his teacher. Or else, the teacher would never be able to take proper measures to make the student score good marks. Similarly, diseases are also meant to be communicated in detail with the doctor and the same goes for a client who has hired a lawyer. You should never keep certain things hidden from your lawyer. Also, another aspect of being secretive is the fact that people become somewhat introverted. Here, the power of management comes into play. Keeping secrets should not make one introverted. One should have subjects to discuss when they are with other people. Some general topics or common topics should be in your stock to make people laugh and gossip about. Some people try to manipulate others when they are asked about certain personal subjects or facts, I would rather suggest that this should be avoided. What one can do in this kind of situation is, give try to divert from the subject. If continuous questions still come in, try to show certain gestures which would tell the other person that you are not comfortable talking about that subject. Moreover, people should be aware of the fact that asking personal questions should be avoided as much as possible.
